The scrap basket being full several weeks ago, it was time to embark on a descrapping - or if not precisely de-scrapping, at least a scrap rationalisation.
I do my scraps by size - I start with the bigger pieces and work down, and I do it a little at a time to make it less tedious. First step is to cut squares from anything larger than 6.5" - these 6.5" squares go in an old cigar box, which I haven't photographed, and are good blocks for setting alternately with pieced 6.5" blocks, for example. I don't cut 6" or 5.5" blocks - the rest of my sizes are 5" or smaller. Above, the right hand stack is the 6.5" and the left hand stack is the 5" squares - what's in the basket is what's left after going through for those two sizes.
Next step, 4.5" squares...
Then 4" squares...
Then 3.5" squares (you can see the contents of the basket getting less and less each time)...
Down to 3" squares in the above photo.
Lots of 2.5" squares (two stacks)
...and even more 2" squares (again, two stacks) - as you can see, the basket is empty. Things smaller than 2" square (but still wider than about an inch - I don't save anything much below 2x1, and sometimes not even those) have their own little drawer.
Here are my scrap drawers - when one of them begins to fill up, then it's time to do some sort of scrappy project!

Fabulous post !!!!
Nice. I have a similar big-to-small system with my hex shapes, but my scrap bin is really several heaps. I just started sorting into black/grey/white, neutral/browns and rich autumn colors, and bright modern colors. We'll see if this makes any difference.
You have such great organization.
Reminded me of science lessons - starting with the sun (scrap box) filling the photo and then it gets progressively smaller as more and more planets ( squares) are photographed with it! I save mine in strips, but again I cut as many as I can to 5", then 2.5", 2" and whatever's left - so when I recently made the 16 blocks, I 2.5 squares I attached colourful strips to white or LV strips and then cross cut them
